I’m always in search of events and pop-up event that captures the spirit of us women. From empowering speeches, celebrity guests, inspirational talks to all things beauty, fashion, brands and accessories. The best part of the attending all of these is that is female owned and driven. #GirlPower
Recently, PopSugar hosted the ultimate girl inspired weekend full of fun, beauty, inspiration and off-course fashion, perfectly titled, PopSugar Playground. This two-day festival highlights all things female. Think bright, colorful, spunky, bold, strong, delicate, playful, serious, and thought provoking pop-up shops and celeb interviews. The festival took place on the weekend of June 9-10 in New York City’s Pier 94. Celebrity guests included Kate Hudson (wow), Mindy Kaling (yay!), Tiffany Haddish (lol). Among these were many more powerful ladies who graced the “Play Stage” such as, Yara Shahidi (Gown-ish), AlunaGeorge (Musician), Amanda Seales (Insecure) and fitness guru, Kayla Itsines.
My cousin (fromnubiana.com) and I, who happened to be bloggers and love all things female, attended the all-day events on Saturday, June 9th. Due to our schedules we could only attend from noon until 5pm that day, but this was enough to get a good feel of this first ever event. We also purchased the general admission tickets, but they do offer VIP tickets, as well as the option to buy tickets for the two days or just one.
Nubiana and I purchased tickets in advance and downloaded the app in order to stay on top of the days events. The app was loaded with tons of info on the events, a map of the space and most importantly a schedule that you could customize and create reminders of talks and events that you didn’t want to miss.
As you entered the venue, you were welcomed by the large Pop Sugar sign, adorned in bright colors that sat atop a row of slides and a ball pit. There were women everywhere of all shapes, colors and sizes. Over the chatter of the crowd, you could hear music playing and the overall joy of the lovely ladies that filled each booth. As you walk by the many stalls of beauty, fitness and fashion products, you notice the array of samples, cool accessories to try, beauty make-overs, tons of line-ups to get goodies, two cafes, a bar and so much more.
I think the highlights of my day were listening to first Mindy Kaling and then Kate Hudson, who were interviewed on the “Play Stage”. There was seats but they were only available to the VIPs. Everyone else stood or sat on the floor to hear their favorite speakers. The Pine-Apple-Rita Bar was awesome, not to mention the drink was refreshing! I grab a drink as I listened to the speakers. After Mindy Kaling’s totally inspiring and awesome interview we toured the space, taking selfies, grabbing samples, joint the long lines to get samples, grabbed a bite, used the restroom then went back the “Play Stage” to hear Kate Hudson’s interview. No wonder she’s so successful! She touched on some insightful and empowering ideas and she looked flawless!
Overall, the experience was a good one. It was the first ever Pop Sugar Playground event. Here are some tips if you plan to attend the next event…
- Download the App. Plan. Plan .Plan you day’s events and shops that you’d like to experience
- Create a schedule. Be Sure to include breaks such as food, bathroom and browsing
- Beware of long lines! Lines are insane not only going to the bathrooms (which in most cases were not very clean), lines to grab food were very long right after the celebrity talks, so make sure you go before!
- Express Yo’Self! Wear something super cute, but comfortable, as you WILL be walking around all day
- Take Pics & Post! Take lots of photos for your Instagram posts as well as participate in the photo opps from your favorite brands. Be sure to post these and tag, tag, tag!
*My one and only critique… Although this event was an exciting and interesting idea, the one major miss for me as a female business owner was that it benefited the brands that were featured and not necessarily the attendees. I was looking for ways to network as well as shop and listen to my fav speakers. This event didn’t allow you, as a female business owner, the opportunity to network. Hopefully they make some improvements for next year and I’ll be sure to attend.
Here are some highlights from my day…
